POVO.ONE is a new platform, but it has a history.

It has grown from an international and collaborative learning project, during 2015-16, which was funded by the UK Research Council and University of Leeds, with a range of other partners (see more on the project under the archive section).

This project was a meeting point between artists, activists and researchers from the UK, Brazil and Mexico, who came together to explore the potency and potential of creative connections in interstitial spaces. We all knew that creative connections (connections through arts collaborations) can produce a powerful collective drive and energy. We wanted to discuss how creative spaces become full of this kind of energy that supports people to get active. What are the qualities and “ingredients” of these spaces?

There were two international workshop meetings during the first year of the project. Some of the collaborative processes we shared, some of the moments in these experimental spaces and our discussions can be seen in the archives on POVO.ONE, as well as in the videos and photos from the project.

With the launch of POVO.ONE we are opening this project, group and curiosity up to others who want to join us. Learning never stops! We are always in a new phase of action! Please join us if you would like to link up, share ideas and opportunities!

POVO.ONE é uma nova plataforma, mas tem uma história.

Ela foi criada e cresceu a partir de um projeto de aprendizado internacional e colaborativo, durante os anos 2015 e 2016, que foi apoioad pelo UK Reasearch Council e a Universidade de Leeds, com uma diversidade de outros parceiros (veja mais sobre o projeto na seção de arquivos).

Este projeto foi um encontro entre artistas, ativistas e pesquisadores do Reino Unido, Brasil e México, que se juntaram para explorar a potência e o pontencial das ligações criativas nos espaços interticiais. Nós todos soubemos das ligações criativas (conexões através de colaborações artísticas) que podem produzir uma energia e uma direção coletiva poderosa. Buscamos discutir como os espaços criativos se tornam cheios desse tipo de energia, que auxiliam as pessoas a se tornar ativas. Quais são as qualidades e os “ingredients” para estes espaços?

Houveram dois encontros e workshops internacionais durante o primeiro ano do projeto. Alguns dos processos colaborativos que compartilhamos, alguns dos momentos nesses espaços experimentais e nossas discussões podem ser vistas nos arquivos do POVO.ONE, assim como vídeos e fotos do projeto.

A partir do lançamento do POVO.ONE, estamos abrindo este projeto, grupo e curiosidade a todos os outros que quiserem participar. O aprendizado nunca pára! Estamos sempre em um novo momento de ação! Fique à vontade para se juntar a nós para compartilhar idéias e oportunidades!

~ Potency and Potential

Ao final do projeto “Potency and Potential”, dois artivistas participantes produziram em colaboração duas peças audiovisuais.

At the end of the ‘Potency & Potential’ project, two artivistas (artist/activists) who participated in the project collaborated to produce two audiovisual works.

Criado por Lou Sumray, uma artista multimídia baseada em Bradford, Yorkshire, Reino Unido, “The Potency and Potential project” foi realizado com múltiplas técnicas, como desenho à mão, colagens, fotografias e animação, uma interpretação sobre todo o processo rico, confuso e (des)organizado neste um ano.

Created by Lou Sumray, a multimedia artist based in Bradford, Yorkshire, UK, “The Potency and Potential project” was made using a range of techniques including freehand drawing, collage, photography and animation. It  presents an interpretation of the whole process in all its rich, confusing and (dis)organised forms, during the year of activity.

Alexandre Gonçalves (Xandi), em colaboração com seu amigo Luís Mora (colaboradores e ativistas do MST), através da animação em stop motion “Mala” mostra uma mensagem de esperança para os novos tempos e reflete sobre os encontros internacionais culturais que fizemos durante o projeto.

Alexandre Gonçalves (Xandi), in collaboration with his friend Luís Mora (collaborators and activists in the MST [Landless Workers’ Movement]), through a stop motion animation called “Mala” (suitcase in Portuguese) that present a message of hope for our times and reflect on the international and cross cultural encounters we had during the project.

Collaborative drawings?

Does anyone else use drawing apps on their phones or tablets? It’s a great way to collaborate on drawings together and I’d love to start a collaboration amongst this network. Attached is an example drawing. This was a collaborative drawing by Simon Turner and I. It was created over a day last weekend and digitally shared using the Sketch app for Android. There are much better and more complex apps but this is an easy way in app so great if you’re new to digital drawing. Anyone fancy it?

Salve a todos parceiros do projeto Potência e Potencial!

Primeiramente gostaria de parabenizar a todos pela imersão no Reino Unido, e parabenizar, em especial, aqueles que correram esta madrugada para escrever o projeto sobre a cultura brasileira do Carnaval!

Escrevo aqui pois vou postar uma série de fotos do carnaval que realizamos este ano. Foi uma festa linda! Enfeitada pela nobreza da nossa cultura pernambucana: o Maracatu de Baque Virado.

Como sempre, a cada ano, quebramos recordes em nosso cortejo ao arrastar para as ruas da COHAB (Conjunto Habitacional) de Carapicuíba, dezenas de alfaias, coletivos artivistas, artistas, produtores, crianças, vizinhos… Pessoas!

E pensando já em ideias para nosso projeto, deixo as imagens de uma inspiração, que não está ligada à visão de carnaval que o mundo vê, onde apenas o samba e as fantasias são enaltecidas, nosso carnaval está ligado à raízes da cultura do povo da roça, sofrido, trabalhador, “miserável”, que mesmo com todas dificuldades, encontra alegria e ritual para se purificar e fazer nossas culturas e festas se engrandecerem!

Hi to all project partners in Potency and Potential!

First I would like to congratulate everyone for immersion in the UK, and congratulate in particular those who rushed this morning to write the project about Brazilian culture of Carnival!

I write here because I will post a series of photos of the carnival we do this year. It was a beautiful party! Decked by the nobility of our Pernambuco culture: Maracatu Baque Virado.

As always, every year, we break records in our procession to drag to the streets of COHAB (Housing Complex) of Carapicuíba, dozens of tools, collective artivistas, artists, producers, children, neighbors … People!

And already thinking ideas for our project, look at these the images of an inspirational event, which is not linked to the carnival vision that the world sees, where only the samba and the costumes are praised, our carnival is connected to the culture of the people of the grass roots, marginalised peoples, workers, “miserable” (people with really dire conditions) that despite all difficulties, finds joy and ritual to purify and make our cultures and festivals are aggrandizement!

A hug to everyone and I will figure out how to post pictures … Hold it!

Alfaias, agogos, surdos, repiques, caixas, xequerês, tamborins, atabaques, apitos, equipamentos de áudio, pessoas e muita disposição para percorrer o percurso da COHAB 2 até a COHAB 5 sede da Associação Quintal Cultural, onde sempre encerramos com uma grande ciranda.

Bom… Esses caras que cantam essa música acima postada, são sensacionais, depois de Raul Seixas, são os únicos rock and roll do Brasil… O resto é só o “rock”… Mas estes, como Raul, antropofagizaram as culturas e vomitaram o rock, porém, “roll”… Sempre rolando!

Esta é a visão da Costa de Fife, na ponta do cais de St. Andrews, na Escócia. Caminhamos por suas ruas, vivenciamos sua cultura e vimos como a história se faz presente e transformada: hoje, a (bela) Cidade de St. Andrews, convive com o silêncio do seu mar, a preces dos peregrinos e os cavalos de aço que insistem em roncar seus motores.

This is the view of the coast of Fife, the tip of the pier of St. Andrews in Scotland . We walked through the streets , we experience their culture and we saw how the past history is present and transformed : today, the (beautiful) City of St. Andrews , coexists with the silence of its sea , the prayers of pilgrims and steel horses they insist on their rumbling engines.
